Exposure over time to Factor–11’s new
CD, It’s In The Blood, brings an
ever-deepening appreciation and
understanding of this multi-dimensional
project. As the liner notes clearly
state, It’s In The Blood is more
than a title. Discovering the deeper
meaning of the CD’s title is in itself
worth the sale price.
The first song, “Mystery Called Love,”
begins by asking the question, “Will I
find love only in you?” The song goes on
to explore the mystery of unconditional
love and its impact on the human
condition. This tune introduces the
punkish-ly thin but pleasant sound of
vocalist Spencer Scheer and an
interestingly tight and parallel vocal
harmony that creates a very engaging
sonic effect. There is also a very nice
lead riff throughout this first cut.
“Inject the Truth” is the second song,
and it has one of the most memorable
hooks of a chorus ever heard. It is cast
in a complex and infectious rhythm that
drives this excellent song and burns it
into the memory. Musically, the first
two songs stand well above the tracks
comprising the middle of the CD.
However, there is some interesting
harmonica work on “America Pride” which
deserves special mention.
“Jerusalem” and “Eighth Day” bring a
stylish conclusion to the CD. A slightly
overdriven rhythm guitar establishes a
fantastically irresistible groove in
“Jerusalem." The feel of this song alone
will bring listeners back to the CD for
many spins. The last song treats
listeners to a funky blues beat,
complete with judicious use of
note-bending harmonica and heart-rending
lead guitar.
It’s In The Blood shows that
Factor-11 is a versatile and
entertaining rock group with the power
to capture your attention and the
finesse to keep it.
